Crispy Fish and Chips Recipe

Ingredients

For the Crispy Fish:

  • 1 ½ lbs white fish fillets (cod, tilapia, or haddock)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cold club soda or beer
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)
  • Lemon wedges (for serving)

For the Crispy Fries:

  • 2 large russet potatoes, cut into fries
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

1. Prepare the Fries:

  • Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Toss potato fries with olive oil, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper.
  • Spread fries in a single layer and bake for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden and crispy.

2. Make the Fish Batter:

  • In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper.
  • Add cold club soda or beer and the beaten egg; mix until smooth.

3. Fry the Fish:

  • Pat fish fillets dry and season with salt and black pepper.
  • Dip each fillet into the batter, letting excess drip off.
  • Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Fry fish in batches for 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy. Drain on a paper towel-lined plate.

4. Serve the Feast:

  • Arrange crispy fish and fries on a platter.
  • Serve hot with lemon wedges.

Tips for Extra Crispiness:

  • Double Crunch Fish: For added crunch, dip fish in flour before the batter.
  • Perfect Fries: Soak potato fries in cold water for 30 minutes before baking.
  • Serve With: Pair with tartar sauce, malt vinegar, or your favorite dipping sauce.
