Chris and Mariesa Hughes are a remarkable couple who have dedicated their lives to rescuing unwanted senior dogs.
Through their nonprofit, The Mr. Mo Project, they have saved over 600 dogs, focusing on elderly and special-needs canines who often get left behind in shelters. The couple covers all vet bills for these animals, even after finding them new homes. Inspired by their dog Moses, who passed from cancer, they aim to ensure these dogs experience love and care for the rest of their lives.
Their initiative not only provides these forgotten dogs with a second chance at life but also highlights the growing issue of senior pets being abandoned due to age-related illnesses or medical costs. Despite having full-time jobs, Chris and Mariesa work tirelessly to manage the overwhelming responsibilities that come with this mission.
They maintain a home equipped with special facilities for the dogs, including hydrotherapy, laser treatments, and even individual kennels.
This journey, however, comes with emotional and financial challenges. The couple has spent over $700,000 on veterinary care in one year alone, and while the successes are rewarding, the heartbreak of losing some dogs is inevitable.
Chris explains, “It’s really hard when you lose one, but seeing the transformations makes everything worth it.”
By turning their passion into a full-time mission, Chris and Mariesa have not only saved the lives of hundreds of dogs but have also set a profound example of love, dedication, and compassion. Their work serves as a reminder that senior dogs deserve a chance at happiness, and with the right care, they can thrive in their golden years.
